IN BARACK OBAMA, BIDEN FOREIGN POLICY
Today, President Biden put forward a clear, realistic and just plan to establish an immediate ceasefire and end the war in Gaza a plan that ensures Israel’s security, returns hostages taken on October 7th to their families, increases aid into Gaza and relieves the suffering of Palestinian civilians, and engages Israelis, Palestinians, Arab countries and the broader international community in the process of rebuilding Gaza.
That was a May 31 tweet from Obama, and as Scott notes, “it may even be his proposal.” For more on that theme see “The Obama Factor,” David Samuels marathon interview with David Garrow. As the Pulitzer Prize winner explained in Rising Star: The Making of Barack Obama, the 1995 Dreams from My Father was a novel, not an autobiography or memoir, and the author a composite character. Samuels agreed, but there was more to it:
I find Barack Obama deeply sympathetic as a person. I identify with him emotionally. Yet there was something about this fictional character that he created actually becoming president that helped precipitate the disaster that we are living through now.
And Obama still has people inside the White House:
Rob Malley is just one person. [This would be the Rob O’Malley placed on leave last year after his security clearance was stripped.] Brett McGurk. Dan Shapiro in Israel. Lisa Monaco in Justice. Susan Rice running domestic policy. It’s turtles all the way down. There are obviously large parts of White House policymaking that belong to Barack Obama because they’re staffed by his people, who worked for him and no doubt report back to him.
According to Samuels, Obama’s people “hold the Iran file. Tony Blinken doesn’t.” Remember, Obama sent $400 million in cash to Iran’s Islamic regime, which took Americans hostage in 1979 and still chants “Death to Israel! Death to America!” With all that going on, the recent “deal” doubtless proceeds from the composite character, but this is not to let fall-guy Joe Biden off the hook. As Scott noted, when it comes to disaster the Delaware Democrat is kind of pierless.
