WaPo Seeks Foreign Correspondent To Cover Texas, “a part of the country that is governed largely by one political party”

“to document life in red state America and develop a new beat mapping the culture, public policies and politics in a region shaped by conservative ideology”

The most influential mainstream media is close to ignorant of anything that happens outside their liberal bubble, and when they do venture out into hostile red territory, it’s with a mixture bewilderment and wonder, something I’ve referred to as “going on Safari.”

In April 2009, I wrote about the phenomenon, Looking At Tea Parties Through Binoculars, Like On Safari (emphasis added):

I attended the Tea Party in Corning, NY, yesterday. There was a good crowd in this relatively small town in western upstate NY (several hours from NY City), several hundred in total. Corning is home to Corning glass and Steuben glass. The entire region has been hit hard by the exodus of jobs to less tax intensive parts of the U.S. and abroad.

I don’t remember which speaker said it, but one of them described how politicians from New York City come up to the region so that they can say they have visited the countryside, and stare at the inhabitants as if through binoculars, like on safari.

And that description was a metaphor for what is motivating the Tea Parties and fueling the outrage. Taxes are the issue, but the problem is much deeper. There is a complete disconnect between the politicians who raise taxes to benefit people who do not pay taxes, and the people who pay taxes.

And a complete lack of respect, epitomized by the derisive coverage of the Tea Parties by the mainstream media, and the phony campaign staged by Media Matters to dismiss the Tea Parties as a creature of Fox News. The truth is that the mainstream media and liberal elites don’t even try to hide their disdain for most of the people in America. And people understand that better than you think.

I followed up on the theme in January 2017, NY Times goes on safari to Texas, struggles to understand natives’ love for their “trucks”:

I remember traveling to Texas when I was in private practice, meeting a lawyer who was investigating a possible investment fraud case who wanted me to get involved.

I’m pretty sure it was in San Antonio.

What I remember most about the trip was the lawyer’s “truck,” or as we say in more refined circles, pickup truck. It was yuge. I don’t recall the specifications on it, but I’m guessing it had as many cylinders as could be had, had a full backseat with its own doors, and was yuge (but I repeat myself). Pretty sure I needed a ladder to get into the vehicle, though my memory might be a little hazy on that part.

The other things I remember is that while we were driving, it began to hail. Not hail like we have in the Northeast. Hail the size of f-ing golf balls. He quickly headed for a parking area under an apartment building, and we waited it out….

We’ve all seen how the mainstream media lives in NY and DC bubbles. Regardless of where they came from, they often embody the shock at how people outside the coastal and liberal bubbles live.

They *literally* didn’t know anyone who voted for Trump, so they were shocked that 60 million people did so. On campuses, which are feeding grounds for journo bubbles, there were crying circles on election night 2016.

Media outlets like Politico are determined not to ignore the deplorables in 2020, so they are going on safaris to observe those strange Trump-supporting beings….

It ran an article recently about The unexpected joy at a Trump rally in Iowa…

If you have to ask, you’ll never understand  Tea Party events were just as joyous, though portrayed in the media as a national security threat. You had to be there.

If you find the joy “unexpected,” you are part of the problem.

Now The Washington Post wants to go on safari, to Texas, that strange whole other country. WaPo is advertising:

Job posting: The Washington Post is looking for an enterprising reporter based in Texas to document life in red state America and develop a new beat mapping the culture, public policies and politics in a region shaped by conservative ideology.

Here’s part of the Job Description (with my explainers in brackets):

The Washington Post is looking for an enterprising reporter [someone who can exaggerate and mislead] based in Texas to document life in red state America [the smelly part of America] and develop a new beat [gain alot of Twitter followers and get a blue check mark] mapping the culture, public policies and politics in a region shaped by conservative ideology [The Handmaid’s Tale].

The ideal candidate is a seasoned journalist who will unearth revelatory stories [look at the freaks] about a part of the country that is governed largely by one political party [no, not California, New York, Illinois, or other blue states, the icky red ones]. We want a reporter who is a graceful writer [lol] and can deliver both intimate personal stories [doxx ’em] and high-elevation pieces that illuminate the forces driving political polarization. This reporter must have a quick metabolism [in time for the next election cycle to help Beto] and the ability to recognize news developments that shed light on the currents reshaping American culture.

We are seeking someone who is enthusiastic about working cooperatively with colleagues who specialize in visual journalism, graphics and data reporting to elevate their coverage. As a member of the America team, this reporter would also be called upon to help cover major breaking news, such as weather-related disasters or mass-casualty events.

Short version: WaPo wants a seasoned journalist who can take a hatchet to people WaPo hates (most of Texas and red states), to mock them, and to do what was done to the Tea Party and Trump supporters, find some outlier and taint the entire state and movement with that person.

WaPo will get what it wants, it has sounded all the dog whistles in it’s job announcement.

I am watching matters develop with regards to the trucker strike, with appreciative interest, seeing that is really another variant of a grass-roots spontaneous civic spontaneity, much like the Tea Party was, some years ago. The Canadian trucker protest has that in common with the Tea Party protesters – but the difference might be that the independent trucker community is a smaller, a more cohesive and even more media-savvy and self-disciplined party. The various Tea Party protests were more general, cut across class lines (at least the urban-focused one that I was involved in was, no matter what the establishment national media might insist) and focused more upon voting in various political races then upcoming, and protesting the general monetary incompetence of the Obama Administration.

This excited a great deal of mostly temporary interest on the part of several different parties. The established GOP locally were initially thrilled to bits, seeing this as a brand-new pony for them to ride, already saddled and bridled; votes for the usual useless GOP establishment creatures, and a bounteous source of volunteers and funds. The establishment media outlets were initially intrigued and then horrified, upon seeing ordinary people who had never gone out for politics at any level … suddenly become intensely interested to the point of participating in massive street gatherings. Upon discovering that Tea Partiers were generally conservative in outlook, and placed a high value on leading balanced, family-oriented and fiscally-responsible lives in well-run communities … well, that would never do! It would be bad for ratings, and because Obama was the inspiration for generating such protests, was obviously raaaaacist.
Also, as far as the establishment media seemed to be concerned, a lack of civic dysfunction, quiet order and economic self-sufficiency would be bad for ratings and would upset the various apple carts and overturn the iron rice bowls of all those credentialed expert on speed-dial to such media commentators as NPR. As the media rep for the local Tea Party at the time, I was rather boggled at how little interest our activities excited among the established media. Any of us on the board could have explained ourselves very coherently to any media rep who would have called up and asked. Instead, they seemed to prefer going to the experts enshrined in their golden Rolodex under the divider of ‘domestic political movements.’
In contrast to all that, the trucker protest is one which, if they put their minds into it – might have certain urban localities and industries by the throat – a capability which the establishment media doesn’t quite seem to grasp, so deeply embedded are they in a class-oriented structure. There are those who can and do work at home on their laptops and know all the right people because they have gone to the right universities … and then, there are those beneath their notice, like grocery clerks, supermarket shelf-stockers, delivery drivers, plumbers, electricians … and truck drivers. (Also air traffic controllers, nurses when they aren’t doing TikTok videos, the janitors who clean public spaces, the housekeepers at hotel chains, taxi and Uber drivers, farmers and mechanics … all of them people who have to actually show up at the work site and put in hours actually being there and doing physical work …)
Suppose the truckers begin to refuse in a large way, to make deliveries, refuse to take contracts to convey goods between one point and the next. Suppose that some truck drivers are sidelined, by their own choice, or by the decisions of high-handed political bureaucrats … Stopped at the borders, or the bridges, or at the ring-roads around various cities? The distribution network is already stressed almost to the breaking point … and what if even more truckers in North America decided to ground their tools, park their trucks and go honk their horns and set up bouncy castles for the kids to play in?
What then, oh wolves?
Deliveries wouldn’t be made, of course. And Peppermint Psaki, the blandly-evasive spokes-liar for the present administration, upon being asked for a reaction to that development at a White House news conference, would likely make some snarky comment about the tragedy of the delayed treadmill. Not a word regarding the delayed – or non-delivery of groceries, infant formula, necessary spare parts, and whole boatloads of essentials.

I haven’t commented on the protest by Canadian truckers in Ottawa. That’s John’s beat, and he’s doing a great job with it.

However, I did come across this passage in a Daily Mail article about the protests:

James Doull, 24, a diesel mechanic who is organizing truckers parked along Wellington Street, where many of the parliamentary and government buildings are located, claimed ‘all the stuff put out by Trudeau and the government’ about the convoy ‘are lies.’

‘There is no racism, the truckers aren’t vandalizing things,’ he told DailyMail.com. ‘Fringe groups coming in may be responsible but it’s not the truckers themselves.

‘We are not right-wing conspiracists, we are hard-working everyday Canadians who just want our freedom back,’ said Doull, who lives in Grand Manan, New Brunswick.

Since DailyMail.com arrived in Ottawa last week we have seen no indication of violence or vandalism or any extremist political agenda. In fact, the demonstrations have shown the opposite.

Apart from the incessant honking of their horns, all has been peaceful. The truckers seem to have united the people of Canada in a common goal, to get rid of government mandates.

False claims of racism and violence by the truckers remind me of similar slurs against the Tea Party. Readers may the allegation of spitting at a black congressman that turned out to be unsupported and almost certainly false.

There are important differences between the truckers’ protest and those of the Tea Party. The truckers’ actions are highly disruptive and maybe illegal. To the best of my recollection, that wasn’t the case with Tea Party protests.

However, both sets of protesters fell victim to the imperative that forces effectively opposing liberal orthodoxy be defamed as racist and violent.

It’s also worth noting, as the Daily Mail does here, that although GoFundMe promoted fundraising efforts for participants in the destructive Capitol Hill Occupied Protest (CHOP) in Seattle where two teens were shot dead, it has cancelled a fundraiser for the Canadian truckers. Being killed is more “disruptive” and unlawful than being deprived of sleep due to honking (although I’m sure I would hate to experience the latter).

GoFundMe defended its decision to cut off the truckers saying it “supports peaceful protests and believe[d] that was the intention of the Freedom Convoy 2022 fundraiser when it was first created.” However, “we now have evidence from law enforcement that the previously peaceful demonstration has become an occupation, with police reports of violence and other unlawful activity.”

But the reports of trucker violence and hate crimes apparently are bogus. In any case, the CHOP protest in Seattle indisputably was violent. Yet this didn’t seem to bother GoFundMe.

Nor does any desire truthfully to report on what’s actually happening with the truckers in Ottawa preoccupy or constrain the liberal media.

Merrick Garland disgracefully weaponized DOJ/FBI and national law enforcement against parents protesting Critical Race teaching and mask mandates. This pure political intimidation.

The mainsteam media also is running with the false claim pushed by the National School Boards Association that the protests are the “equivalent to a form of domestic terrorism and hate crimes.” In Rhode Island, the statewide school committee association is gathering information about protests and promising to coordinate with the FBI.

We have seen this movie before. It’s the “eliminationist narrative” used against the Tea Party and Trump supporters. We covered the Tea Party false accusations at the time, where the media blamed every act of violence on Tea Party supporters even though such claims never had evidence and turned out to be false. Here’s what we previously documented:

I covered the media mistreatment of the Tea Party starting in 2009, and the same pattern took hold: An act or alleged act of violence immediately was blamed on Tea Party supporters in the absence of actual evidence that the alleged perpetrator was a Tea Party supporter, and in many cases where there was evidence the alleged perpetrator was liberal or leftist.

It all was for the purpose of portraying Tea Party supporters specifically and the “right-wing” more generally as “eliminationist,” people who were prone to political violence:

It started with Bill Sparkman, the part-time Census worker who went missing and then was found dead, setting off an avalanche of mainstream media and left-blogosphere accusations that he was the victim of anti-government “right-wing” hate.  It turned out that Sparkman killed himself, but there were few if any apologies coming.

The Sparkman accusations were based on nothing more than a desire to demonize the newly formed and rapidly growing Tea Party movement as terrorists and un-American.  It was as if they were hoping for an act of Tea Party violence.

The false eliminationist narrative directed at the Tea Party went on for years, aided and abetted by Democrat operative groups like Think Progress and by establishment Republicans who hated the Tea Party.

The prolonged — to this day — attempt to blame Sarah Palin for the shooting of Gabby Giffords by Jared Loughner was one of the worst examples, but just one of many that we covered.

In 2017, former President Barack Obama resorted to profanity to let his former staffers know what he really thought about the TEA party movement. The movement rose up to challenge Obama’s increase in the size and scope of the federal government, especially his health care overhaul known as “Obamacare.” Democrats have long demonized the TEA party as racist, and Obama echoed this baseless charge.

According to Edward-Isaac Dovere, a staff writer at The Atlantic and author of the forthcoming book Battle for the Soul: Inside the Democrats’ Campaigns to Defeat Donald Trump, Obama called the TEA party “racist motherf**kers.” Business Insider’s Sonam Sheth obtained an advance copy and reported the remarks.

After the Obama Foundation’s holiday party in Chicago in 2017, the former president and his staff chatted about the latest hurdles the Democratic Party faced. Staffers “got him going by asking what it was like, after coming in working with Jamie Dimon and Lloyd Blankfein and other big bankers, to be made out as an anticapitalist by the Republicans,” Dovere writes in the book, referring to the chief executive officer of JPMorgan Chase and former chief executive officer of Goldman Sachs, respectively.

“Obama gave a long, reasoned answer,” Dovere writes. “As for the Tea Party, Obama said, well, they were ‘racist motherf—ers.'”

The former president also showed immense disdain for then-President Donald Trump, Dovere writes.

“He’s a madman,” Obama told “big donors looking to squeeze a reaction out of him in exchange for the big checks they were writing to his foundation,” Dovere writes.

“More often: ‘I didn’t think it would be this bad.’ Sometimes: ‘I didn’t think we’d have a racist, sexist pig.’ Depending on the outrage of the day … a passing ‘that f**king lunatic’ with a shake of his head,” Dovere adds.

Obama condemned Trump as “that corrupt motherf**ker” after news broke that Trump was speaking to foreign leaders without any aides on the calls.

Yet Obama’s claim that the TEA party was racist echoed a longstanding — and baseless — critique from the Left. In 2019, The New York Times published a thoughtful retrospective about the movement, and leftists faulted the Times for leaving out any accusations of racism. The Times duly relented. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) claimed that “the grounding of the tea party was xenophobia, the underpinnings of white supremacy.”

I witnessed the TEA party in action, and I helped conservative TEA party Republicans challenge establishment Republicans, so I can tell you the movement was not about racism.

The TEA party movement was about holding Washington, D.C., accountable to the people. It was about holding establishment Republicans accountable for decreasing the size and scope of government. It was about fiscal responsibility and reining in the monstrous federal deficit and federal debt. Some of us still believe in these principles, and were sad to see President Trump fail to shrink the deficit, even as he cut regulations and fulfilled other conservative promises.

As the Federalist’s David Harsanyi rightly pointed out, Texas is TEA party activists were just as angry with the wealthy white leader of Congress — Nancy Pelosi — as they were at the black president, Barack Obama. They were also angry at the white former president, George W. Bush, for selling out on fiscal conservatism. Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.) accused a TEA party crowd of calling him ugly names and spitting on him while he walked with Pelosi. There were cameras that day, and no one was able to find evidence to back up his claim.

I raised money for tea party candidates in 2014, hoping those small government candidates would beat the Republican establishment sell-outs who kept the deficit high and refused to stand up for the Originalist plain meaning of the Constitution. Every single one of the Republicans we hoped to unseat was white.

The TEA party movement helped energize Republicans, leading to victories in the House and Senate, and ultimately the White House. Many of the promises of that movement remained unfulfilled under Trump — even Obamacare stands today, and the national debt has ballooned. True change in Washington is hard, and while Trump did fulfilled many important promises — originalist Supreme Court justices, cutting regulations, defending the sanctity of life, reversing the Obama administration’s rejection of science on transgender issues — he failed to curb the growth of the federal debt.

President Joe Biden’s radicalism will only energize the Republican Party and the conservative movement, giving something like the tea party a resurgence. Whether or not the TEA party returns, however, one thing is certain: the TEA party was never racist, even if the Left is anxious to paint it that way.

The House — i.e., House Democrats joined by 11 Republicans, on a near party-line vote — removed Republican outlier Marjorie Taylor Greene from the committees to which she had been assigned. The AP story on the vote is here. Condemning the remarks that have brought Greene into disrepute, Senator Tom Cotton commented further on yesterday’s edition of SiriusXM’s Breitbart News Daily with host Alex Marlow:

“Make no mistake, plenty of Democrats do and say outlandish things, too. Ilhan Omar has made multiple anti-Semitic statements. Maxine Waters urged mobs to attack Trump administration officials. Eric Swalwell cavorted with a Chinese spy. Chuck Schumer threatened two Supreme Court justices [if] they didn’t rule the way he wanted. I don’t see MSNBC and CNN and the liberal media calling them out for it.”

“But just because Democrats and the media accept that doesn’t mean we should,” Cotton added. “We want to win elections. We see the consequences, right now, of losing elections in the Senate when Chuck Schumer is jamming through a two-trillion-dollar giveaway to liberal special interests, and the next up is amnesty. The DREAM Act is coming down the pipe.”

Cotton went on, “The way to stop this woke Democratic agenda is to win elections, and we will win elections with strong credible conservatives who stand up for America. If our party tolerates conspiracy theories, then we’re only going to lose elections and America is going to be much worse for it.”

Cotton stated, “What the Democrats proposed to do, to reach into the minority and decide who the minority party is going to put on committees is unprecedented, and if they go down that path, then mark my words, Republicans in two years, we’ll go down the same path. Should Ilhan Omar, who’s made multiple anti-Semitic statements, be sitting on the Foreign Relations Committee? Should Eric Swalwell, cavorting with a Chinese spy be sitting on the Intelligence Committee?”

Cotton added, “This is a very dangerous precedent that the Democratic majority in the House wants to set when they’re on the precipice of losing that majority next year. What Democrats and the liberal media want to do is to leverage a fringe of extremist statements and violence from the right against mainstream conservatives in a way that they would never do on the left.”

Cotton recalled, “Remember, it was a Bernie Sanders supporter who showed up in Alexandria, Virginia, and shot Steve Scalise, almost killed him, and tried to commit mass murder against congressional Republicans, and would have done so if it hadn’t been for the bravery and quick action of Capitol police officers who were there at that ballpark.”

“When it was discovered that that was a Bernie Sanders supporter, it was out of the news within 24 hours, not something that could be discussed, and frankly a lot of Republicans didn’t discuss it either because he was plainly a crazy person, and there was not an effort by Republicans writ large to leverage that kind of extremist violence or extremist rhetoric … against mainstream Democratic liberals,” concluded Cotton.

‘Over a Million People’ Will Rally in Washington to Pressure Congress: ‘Stop the Steal’ Organizer

Ali Alexander, a national organizer of the “Stop the Steal” movement, spoke to NTD’s “Focus Talk” about the upcoming rally in Washington D.C. on Jan. 6, where he says over a million people will show up to protest alleged election fraud.

“We’re going to have over a million people in Washington, D.C., because we have the president even tweeting about the event,” said Alexander. “What we’re working on right now is lobbying members in the House and members in the Senate.”

Alexander said that at least three senators will stand with President Donald Trump and that he has talked to more than 30 House members that will also object to the certification of the Electoral College votes on Jan. 6, which will trigger a debate over the voter fraud allegations.

He continued to say that their internal metrics show eight times more interest for this event compared to two previous “Stop the Steal” marches and a prayer rally held in Washington on Dec. 12, where hundreds of thousands of people participated.

“With the president tweeting it, it has been a call to action. And we’ve been organizing caravans, we have over 100 charter buses coming into Washington, D.C. And I know of over 30,000 cars coming from Washington State, California, Florida, Maine, all of the edges and the corners of America will descend on the people’s capital. So my own personal estimate is at least a million, [1.5 million] people. But I think we might have even more,” said Alexander.

Alexander emphasized that the constitutional process is of utmost importance and that they want to urge Congress to stand for voter integrity.

“It’s a time of the people, the people want their Congress to do the right thing,” said Alexander. “We don’t care about bureaucratic deadlines or silly judges, what we care about is that the right thing is done, and we all know that there’s voter fraud in this country, all of us.”

Alexander says that he has had more credible death threats in the last eight weeks than in his 12 years as a public figure.

“We’ve had to spend a lot of money protecting me. And that’s unfortunate because we don’t have any big donors at Stopthesteal.us,” he said. “And there’s been pressure from my own party: ‘If you do this, you’ll never work again Ali’ or ‘If you do this, we’ll blacklist you.’ If we cannot vote, nothing else matters.”

Alexander also said in the interview that leftist ideology is “an order that considers itself liberal in thought,” but in reality uses technocratic totalitarian methods to enforce conformity to Marxism, communism, and socialism.

When asked about the use of the “liberal” name, Alexander replied: “Only on the surface. Equality, fairness, these don’t mean anything to these people.”

“We all have this nature where we want to enforce our ideology. And so when you take away the restraints, the checks and the balances, either side, the left or right will become totalitarian.”

Speaking on the history of communism, Alexander said: “They believe that they will usher in peace for the world. But it will only be followed by destruction because we humans are flawed, we’re fallible … this has happened in every instance that they’ve tried it. These communists have killed people and they’re not any more economically prosperous.”

Alexander then directed his words to the right, urging them to view the fight as a moral one rather than about taxes or healthcare.

“Many of us have been fighting socialism and communism like it was a cliché line, or that it was about taxes or healthcare. No, this is a moral fight. And I have immigrants from China, immigrants from Eastern Europe, immigrants from South America, who will grab my orange sweater and cry and say ‘I’ve seen this before.’ It’s a phrase that haunts me because I’ve understood it intellectually, now I understand it emotionally. Because they have seen this before and this is how this happened.”

Motivated by God

When asked about what motivates him to keep working on the “Stop the Steal” campaign, he answered:

“God. This country was started by Puritans wanting to practice. Then it was founded by men who said ‘we like the king, but he has turned into a tyrant and the king must still answer to God.’ The Declaration of Independence is not a document against monarchy, it’s a document against the abuse of monarchy and the recognition that that divine spark exists inside of every human, child, and adult. And so in a lot of ways, what we’re doing is we’re saying ‘Stop the Steal’ is a metaphysical journey, both civic and spiritual, because there’s nothing to go above government when it becomes tyrannical unless you invoke God. You cannot challenge government unless there’s something higher than it.”

“What motivates me is getting up and every day knowing that if I say the right thing, thousands and thousands of more Americans will wake up. God’s giving me the words, God’s giving me the energy, I was already depleted. I had exhausted all of my energy for the election. And that’s why I said I can’t do ‘Stop the Steal’ again. Somehow, I’ve been going for 20 hours a day, or 18 or 20 hours a day for eight weeks. I did not take off Thanksgiving. I took half-day on Christmas. That’s it. And I will keep fighting so that people wake up, because the people are stronger than the government. The people are stronger than the tyrants. And I know that. And if I have to act as a sacrifice: my energy, my emotions, my life, my money, whatever, I will give that so that my brothers and my sisters—children of God—can wake up and fight tyrants, because I think we can do it peacefully. Heaven forbid it has to go further, but these are our rights endowed at our creating moment.”
