Third gun company packs up and leaves New York

Since the passage of the NY SAFE Act, which we’ve discussed here before, it’s not just Empire State gun owners who have been feeling the pressure. Gun manufacturers and distributors have been the focus of far too much state meddling, not to mention the bad PR associated with being labeled as the bad guys while they provide jobs to thousands of the state’s residents. Starting last year, some of these companies began voting with their feet, taking their operations (and jobs) and moving to more friendly climes. As my friend IrishSpy at Public Secrets notes, another company has joined their ranks.

Nearly 10 months since New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D.) signed the SAFE Act, opposition to the law continues to increase, three gun companies have announced plans to leave the state, and a key provision in the law has been quietly delayed.
American Tactical Imports is the third gun company to announce it would be leaving the state and will be investing $2.7 million in its new facility and creating 117 new jobs in South Carolina.

The delayed provision is the real-time background check for all ammunition purchases; no reason has been given for the hold-up. Maybe they hired the same company that designed healthcare.gov.
Read the rest for some jaw-dropping instances of people being arrested for ticky-tack violations of the state’s new ammunition limits. I swear, the best way to get people to realize how bad progressivism is as a governing philosophy is perhaps to just them have power for a while and sit back while they tick everyone off.

I know that a lot of liberals like to scoff at the idea of the invisible hand of the market, but this is yet another crystal clear example of this phenomenon in action. New York is already bleeding residents, being one of the highest taxed and least free states in the nation. But the SAFE Act has taken a toll on this particular industry, historically one of the foundation employers of the state. If Remington Arms leaves Ilion, New York, that will be pretty much the end of the industry, as well as all of the associated jobs. Less freedom, less money, less employment… less people.
There was a time when New York Republicans wondered if they could ever swing the electoral college powerhouse of NY into the red column. That answer is still clearly no. But the unfortunate consolation prize is that the Democrats may turn it into a toothless political wimp by emptying out all of the voters except for the financial district in the Big Apple.
