Third Anniversary of a Biden Disaster

Third Anniversary of a Biden Disaster

by John Hinderaker in AfghanistanBiden Foreign Policy

The Biden administration’s withdrawal from Afghanistan was a fiasco in several ways. Thirteen American service members were killed during the chaotic scene at Kabul’s airport. Billions of dollars in American war materiel were left behind, which the Taliban now proudly parades like a Roman triumph. The chaotic scene in which thousands of Afghans tried desperately to flee, reminiscent of South Vietnam, will not be forgotten.

It is impossible to understand how the Biden Administration could have organized the withdrawal so poorly. Senator Tom Cotton said at the time that any Marine Captain could have done a better job, but I think that understates the case. I think that any of my daughters (let alone my son) could have figured out that you should get the civilians out first, then the soldiers. How the Biden Administration managed to reverse that logical order is inexplicable, unless it was deliberately trying to destroy American influence and prestige.

Earlier today, President Trump attended a memorial service at Arlington National Cemetery for some of the fallen service members. Joe Biden wasn’t there, of course. Apparently he was on vacation, as usual. The Democrats have abandoned any pretense that we have a president.

But I digress. The Democrat-loyal Associated Press headlines: “Trump rebukes Harris and Biden on anniversary of Afghanistan bombing that killed 13 service members.” Also this: “Trump tries to connect Harris to the chaotic Afghanistan War withdrawal on anniversary of attack.”

Former President Donald Trump on Monday tied Vice President Kamala Harris to the chaotic Afghanistan War withdrawal on the third anniversary of the suicide bombing that killed 13 U.S. service members, calling the attack a “humiliation.”

It was, of course, a humiliation. I haven’t seen anyone try to deny that. And Trump hardly needed to “tie” Kamala Harris to the disaster, since she has proudly boasted of her important involvement.

The AP does what it can, but it has nothing to work with:

President Joe Biden’s administration was following a withdrawal commitment and timeline that the Trump administration had negotiated with the Taliban in 2020. A 2022 review by a government-appointed special investigator concluded decisions made by both Trump and Biden were the key factors leading to the rapid collapse of Afghanistan’s military and the Taliban takeover.

But it was the Biden Administration–whoever was running it at the time, certainly not Slow Joe–that screwed up the withdrawal to an almost incomprehensible degree, resulting in 13 dead service members and billions in materiel in the hands of the Taliban. It isn’t that hard to understand.

This is one of the key issues that Trump needs to continue to hammer home if he hopes to win in November.
