A politically resilient President Trump has pushed into the lead of the 2020 White House race, riding the public’s good feelings about the economy and the view by voters that all leading Democratic candidates will “probably lose,” according to the latest election survey.
By a 52% to 48% margin, Trump is leading the generic “Democrat” in the race when voters were asked "Who do you think will win," a significant margin for a president who just beat back impeachment to stay in office.
The latest Economist/YouGov survey also found that most voters believe that Trump will probably beat all of his Democratic challengers by at least 19 percentage points.
While White House officials are buoyed by the results and other polls showing a post-impeachment surge, some told Secrets that they believe the race is extremely tight and unclear due to the emergence of former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg in the race.
But what they are pleased with is the finding in the survey and others that the economy is tops on the minds of voters and that the president is getting credit for its advances as well as those on Wall Street.
The survey also found that Trump has unified the party, which is upset with Republican Utah Sen. Mitt Romney’s vote to convict the president in the impeachment process and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s tearing up of the State of the Union address.
Said the survey analysis:
"Utah Senator Mitt Romney’s vote to convict the president on one impeachment count does not sit well with Republicans. In this poll, only 21% of Republicans have a favorable rating of Romney; 70% are unfavorable (Democrats, on the other hand, view him favorably, 62% to 25%.) House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s ripping up of the text of the president’s speech after the State of the Union gets criticism: Americans disapprove 48% to 38%. Those who disapprove include 21% of Democrats and 51% of independents."
