ALLAH ISN’T FIXING THIS [WITH COMMENT BY JOHN]

NYDNGod
NYDNGodToday’s New York Daily News cover (left, via Twitter) mocks the prayers of thee Republican presidential candidates and House Speaker Paul Ryan for the victims of yesterday’s massacre in San Bernardino. “God isn’t fixing this,” the cover blares. Subhead: “As latest batch of innocent Americans are left lying in pools of blood, cowards who could truly end gun scourge continue to hide behind meaningless platitudes.”
The Daily News cover perfectly channels the spirit of President Obama. Before the bodies were cold Obama was calling for new gun control measures that may or may not have had any bearing on the San Bernardino massacre, as John points outhere.
The cover was prepared before the blood had been cleaned up and before the perpetrators were identified. It implies knowledge of some modest gun control reform that would have prevented the massacre. It asserts that the failure to implement such a reform stems from cowardice. Here is the Daily News story that complements the cover; the story conveys the Democrats’ line on events as they were breaking yesterday. The Daily News cover is an in-kind contribution to the Democrats.
In retrospect, at this point, the Daily News cover looks like a wild misfire born of wishful thinking. “Allah isn’t fixing this” might be closer to the mark, as the Daily News’s own coverage of the massacre suggests. The Daily News reports that the Clyde member of the Bonnie and Clyde duo is described by his father as a “very religious Muslim.”
The duo donned matching military garb and body armor to perpetrate the attack. They parked their six-month old daughter with Clyde’s mom before they went on their rampage. They perpetrated the attack with AR-15s while wearing GoPro cameras.
FOX News reports that the Bonnie and Clyde’s apartment was a “bomb-making factory,” with improvised explosive devices and remote-controlled cars for delivering explosives to their targets.
Coworkers told the Los Angeles Times that Clyde had recently returned from Saudi Arabia with a wife he had met online. Information regarding Bonnie is sketchy at best.
As if to put an exclamation point on the events, CAIR called a press conference featuring Clyde’s brother-in-law Farhan Khan yesterday. CAIR holds itself out as a civil rights organization, but it figured as an unindicted coconspirator in the government’s prosecution of the Holy Land Foundation as a Hamas fundraiser. Asked whether Clyde was religious,Khan declined to comment. (I wrote about CAIR’s appearance in the Holy Land Foundation case in the NR column “Coming clean about CAIR.”)
“I have no idea why would he do that. Why would he do something like this. I have absolutely no idea,” Khan said. “I’m in shock myself.”
The FBI says it cannot rule out terrorism as a motive. “I am still not willing to say that we know that for sure,” said the FBI’s David Bowdich during a news conference yesterday. “We definitely are making some movements that it is a possibility.” That tentative statement holds up better at this point than the Daily News cover and the Democrats’ party line.
JOHN adds: This is an excellent summary of what we know so far. I would only add that the Daily News’s anti-Christian take on the murders was not limited to that paper, but rather was the main theme of the Left yesterday. All over Twitter, liberals, seemingly in coordinated fashion, mocked prayer and explicitly or implicitly contrasted the futility of religion with the certitudes of gun control. Via InstaPundit, Ace has examples. It was a disgusting display, and attracted attention to the extent that Rand Paul was asked about it on Fox News this morning. Paul responded with exemplary grace and restraint.
