Bolton: A Hillary Presidency Would Be ‘Third Obama Term’
by ANDREW JOHNSON
John Bolton told an enthusiastic CPAC crowd that he’s determined to make national security a leading issue in the presidential campaign, “one way or another.” But while he played it close to the vest on whether he will run for the White House himself, the former United States ambassador to the United Nations didn’t hold back as he warned that a Hillary Clinton administration’s foreign policy would be “indistinguishable” from that of an Obama one. Attendees were likely expecting to hear a different tone on foreign policy, but a last-minute – and somewhat ironic — change of schedule brought the hawkish Bolton to the main stage six hours earlier than originally planned. Bolton stepped in to take what was supposed to be the slot for Senator Rand Paul (R., Ky.), who he has criticized for supporting a less interventionist American foreign policy, after Paul was held up by a vote on Capitol Hill. Bolton focused much of his speech on the reasons he believes Hillary Clinton is unqualified for the White House, warning that a Clinton presidency would be a “third Obama term.” “Her four years at the State Department show she is not fit to be president of the United States,” he said, citing her handling of the Arab Spring, Syria, Russia, and other foreign policy challenges to make his point. Benghazi also played a prominent role in Bolton’s remarks, as he urged the audience that they must “not ever forget” the 2012 attacks that left four Americans, including the U.S. ambassador, dead in Libya. “This is why national security issues must be at the center of the 2016 presidential debate,” he said. “The American people are ahead of their leaders on that point – they want a leader who will defend the country.”
