Fix. This. Blunder. by: Hugh Hewitt
A vast majority of Americans are shocked that President Obama and his legal and national security team have decided to treat the Christmas Day terrorist as an ordinary criminal suspect and extend him all the standard protections and free legal advice as are offered American citizens accused of crimes.
The president's counterterrorism advisor, John Brennan, dutifully attempted to defend this astonishing and dangerous decision yesterday, but did not succeed. It remains an obviously ideological and wrong-headed decision, and the terrorist remains protected by his lawyers. Ask yourself if this makes sense given the concerns over similar terrorists-on-missions-from-Yemen?
Abdulmutallab should be sent to Gitmo or a similar military facility for interrogation by specialists trained to deal with al Qaeda. His lawyer will object and can bring the appropriate writ before a federal court, and we can begin to ascertain whether courts are going to oblige us to act this way. Thus far no court has required the steps taken by the Obama Administration. This was a unilateral act by the president's team. It is simply irresponsible to adopt this practice, and horribly so when this terrorist might have information that could prevent other attacks already well past planning stage.
