Straw men at the border
July 9, 2014
President Obama traveled to Texas today for some big-buck fundraisers with filthy rich supporters. He declined to visit the border that is the source of the flood of unaccompanied Central American minors that he has done absolutely nothing to stanch. Judging by his actions, he wants to keep them coming. Obama was shamed into holding a couple of meetings that included Governor Perry. USA Today’s Rick Jervis reports on the meetings here; the Times’s Jackie Calmes and Ashley Parker report on the meetings here.
Following the meetings, Obama made a brief statement and filibustered responses to two questions. The White House appears not to have posted the remarks online and I can’t find the text elsewhere. I’ll add a link if I can find one later. ViaNoah Rothman/Hot Air, the video below provides the entirety of Obama’s performance. It has to be seen to be believed.
In his remarks Obama deployed an army of straw men to plump for $3.7 billion in emergency funding. Calling his arguments straw men is an insult to straw men everywhere, but the metaphor is apt here. Obama’s straw men are the only force that will be deployed at the border, and they are invitations to come on in.
Dan Cadman of the Center for Immigration Studies analyzes the funding request here. It is difficult to find anything in the funding that will actually secure the border. Obama simply refuses to undertake the actions necessary to put an end to the crisis insofar as one understand the crisis to be the continuing flood of illegal Central Americans availing themselves of the services of drug cartels and human traffickers who understand precisely where they fit in Obama’s grand scheme.
UPDATE: Noah Rothman provides an excellent anatomy of Obama’s remarks in the awkwardly titled Hot Air post“Obama’s pathetic border crisis blame shifting.”
