The CDC’s in-your-face double standards lost America’s trust — winning it back will be tough

The CDC’s in-your-face double standards lost America’s trust — winning it back will be tough

Once again, our governing “elites” are illustrating their cluelessness about just how low the public’s opinion of them has sunk, and why.

The latest example involves Demetre Daskalakis, former director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, who rage-quit his post last week after his bosses, noting the pandemic “emergency” is long over, ended special rules allowing for broad use of the COVID-19 shot.

“This is where fascism lives,” Daskalakis angrily declared as he and other Centers for Disease Control officials stalked off their jobs.

“Fascism” seems to be this administration’s most over-diagnosed ailment, applied with abandon to anything the left doesn’t like.

But Daskalakis’, uh, fevered response is exactly what you don’t want from a public health official.

In fact, given widespread public doubts about the COVID jab and the general debacle of the CDC’s COVID response, the last thing we need is a hysterical and politically extreme figure in charge of immunizations.

We need someone steady, sensible, respectable and respected in that job — but what we got with Daskalakis was another lefty theater kid putting on a show.

This is a man who made himself famous by posing on a magazine cover wearing a leather pentagram harness, and showed off his bondage-gear collection in numerous publicly distributed photos.

Daskalakis ran the Biden administration’s weak response to the monkeypox outbreak — pushing to rename the illness “mpox” for reasons of political correctness.

Although he and other government experts were aware that the disease was spreading mostly via sex parties in the gay community, they chose to downplay that fact for fear of “stigma” and pretend that every American was equally at risk.

“Political correctness and a desire not to offend drove the messaging and public health response,” the Oversight Project, a government watchdog, found in 2023: “Officials were primarily concerned with not stigmatizing (mpox carriers), the exact opposite of the COVID response.”

Yes: During COVID, the CDC ordered us to stand aside as our loved ones died alone in hospitals, and made us postpone or downsize weddings and funerals.

Based on CDC guidance, states and cities canceled our church services and even punished us for going outdoors without masks.

But monkeypox was different: “You know, one person’s idea of risk is another person’s idea of a great festival or Friday night,” Daskalakis said breezily as he explained why the CDC didn’t order the shutdown of gatherings where mpox was spreading.

“So we have to sort of embrace that with joy.”

As Will Chamberlain noted on X, “The CDC is utterly useless if it is not seen as credible by the majority of the country, and yet they employed a guy with massive satanic tattoos who wore bondage gear during a photo shoot as their point person on immunization.”

Daskalakis’ antics may seem delightfully edgy to members of our governing class, but they play very differently with the normal-American community.

It seemed deliberately provocative to choose the gay bondage guy as the face of the agency’s immunization PR at a time of spreading skepticism about modern vaccines.

Then again, Biden put cross-dressing luggage thief Sam Brinton in charge of nuclear waste, so I guess it was par for the course.

But now we have a new administration, with new priorities.

DEI programs of the sort loved by the prior administration stress “cultural competence,” but its practitioners never bother to demonstrate competence in the nation’s mainstream culture.

When that comes back to bite you it isn’t “fascism,” but the wages of narcissistic political ineptitude.

Of course, these problems might be forgivable if the CDC was, you know, good at its actual job.

But it’s not.

This was demonstrated in its shambolic response to Ebola a decade ago, and much more dramatically demonstrated in its equally shambolic response to COVID.

In truth, most of our institutions have become useless and corrupt as those who run them become more concerned with performing for fellow elites than performing their actual jobs.

And because the elites have such contempt for normal people, they reward those who seem “transgressive” — regardless of whether they’re good at their jobs (they often aren’t), and regardless the damage done to public trust.

If you were an artist on the Left Bank in 1925 it may have been amusing, or at least attention-getting, to Ã©pater les bourgeois (annoy the ordinary folks).

In 2025, it’s just embarrassing.

And even the French avant-garde saved that stuff for the arts, not for public health.

Enough.

Nobody wants to have weird shocking people injecting things into their veins.

How about hiring some nice, boring, trustworthy, competent people for a change?

Or watch the CDC fade into irrelevance.

Top O' the Briefing

Happy Tuesday, dear Kruiser Morning Briefing friends. The Sine Qua Non Sequitur is recovering from a rollicking "Pictionary and Pints" marathon at an undisclosed brew pub.

OK, just a few quick post-holiday Monday musings, then everyone can throw themselves back into a normal schedule. I hope everyone who had the day off enjoyed it.

My daughter was born right around the time that the first Harry Potter books were published, so that whole phenomenon was a big part of her youth. Honestly, all of that was more pleasant to deal with as a parent than most of what Disney was putting out at the time. I even read the first few books in the series just to see what all of the hoopla was about.

I might have read them all if I'd known how cool J.K. Rowling would turn out to be.

Rowling has been giving a years-long master class in how to deal with the lunatic leftist "you will be made to care" idiots who insist that men can menstruate and have babies. They've done everything that they can to cancel her and poison her legacy, repeatedly harassing her online, spewing the venom that we've all come to expect from the tolerant leftists. Rowling handles them all with good cheer and a rapier wit. Here's a recent favorite of mine:

YAHTZEE!

The thing that has been fun to watch is all of the mentally unwell Rainbow Mafia freaks trying to quit J.K. Rowling but unable to quit their Harry Potter fetish. That's made her too big to fail, and it is obviously gnawing at the haters. They've got hate-posting on X, she's got books, movies, theme parks, and video games.

In fact, the best-selling video game of 2023 was Hogwarts Legacy, which was the latest in the Wizarding World franchise, which all take place in a Harry Potter prequel universe. The game was highly anticipated, but the trans cheerleaders were at fever pitch over Rowling at the time. There was a coordinated effort online and in the media to try and ruin the success of the game. There were a lot of threats of shaming anyone who purchased the game and played it online. It was heated, it was intense, and it was an utter failure.

There's another pile-on afoot, which Matt wrote about:

Chris Columbus, director of the first two Harry Potter films, has declared that a reunion of the original cast is “never going to happen,” blaming J.K. Rowling’s controversial views on transgender issues. Columbus described the situation as “so complicated with all the political stuff,” noting that actors like Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson have publicly rejected Rowling’s stance, making any reunion impossible.

Rowling fired back on X with a lengthy post, framing her response as a direct challenge to her critics and pushing back against what she described as a persistent mischaracterization of her beliefs.

“As another man who once worked with me declares himself saddened by my beliefs on gender and sex, I thought it might be useful to compile a list for handy reference,” Rowling wrote. She then laid out a series of questions, asking which of her positions could possibly make actors and directors so upset.

This is one of the few times that I'm glad that long posts are a thing on X. The list of questions that Rowling provides are brilliant. She sets up her detractors to expose themselves as the intolerant bigots that they are if they ever have the guts to answer them. I'm thinking of printing them out and posting them all around my left-of-left neighborhood.

I don't really believe that J.K. Rowling will cancel cancel culture like I wrote in the headline, but I do believe that she's showing the way even for people who aren't wealthy contributors to pop culture. She's showing people that they shouldn't apologize for their beliefs.

More importantly, she's providing a grand example of sticking to those beliefs.

This Explosive Revelation Could Bury Lisa Cook

This Explosive Revelation Could Bury Lisa Cook

AP Photo/Mark Schiefelbein, File

Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook is going to have some ‘splainin’ to do after it was revealed that she is renting out a home she listed as her “primary residence” when filling out mortgage applications.

Charlie LeDuff of the Michigan Enjoyer in a post and video on X exposed Cook’s alleged misdeeds, noting that she “has a bank loan on a ‘secondary home in Massachusetts, which the Trump administration alleges she rents out full-time.”

“A judge might call that mortgage fraud,” LeDuff added.

Cook also owns a condo in Atlanta, which she claims is her primary residence on banking and government documents. The Trump administration alleges there is evidence that she rents that one out too. And that also could be mortgage fraud.

But Cook also has a THIRD home in Ann Arbor, which she also lists as her primary residence on banking and government papers. Lisa must be living in Ann Arbor in the tidy brick house with a columned portico on Jackson Avenue, right?

LeDuff, who visited the third home, indicated it was not exactly in tip-top condition. “The glass in the storm door was filthy with neglect,” he wrote. “A metal lockbox—the kind used by realtors—hung on the door knob. From the porch, I could see a figure sitting at the dining room table. When I knocked, the door slightly cracked open, only to reveal a white man partially visible behind the filthy glass.”

One of the individuals LeDuff spoke to at the home indicated he was renting the home. The author wrote, It’s hard to believe Cook got confused over her mortgage paperwork” because she “is a financial sophisticate, a member of the board of governors of the world’s most powerful central bank.”

Cook allegedly listed two of her properties as primary residences in her 2025 government ethics filings.

Cook is facing allegations of mortgage fraud involving properties she owns in Massachusetts, Georgia, and Michigan. Federal Housing Finance Agency Director Bill Pulte said she misrepresented her properties to obtain more favorable mortgage rates.

President Donald Trump fired Cook “for cause” last month after demanding that she resign. Cook responded by filing a lawsuit against the president, the Federal Reserve Board of Governors, and Fed Chair Jerome Powell. The suit alleges that the president does not have the authority to fire her.

This isn’t looking good for Cook. Yes, it is likely that many Americans make these types of mistakes when filling out paperwork. But, as LeDuff pointed out, Cook is definitely not one of those people. A person in her position would know better than to list a rental property as a primary residence.

However, it appears many like Cook get away with this because they are in powerful positions. New York Attorney General Letitia James is facing similar allegations, and there are likely plenty more who have done the same. Perhaps at least some of these people might face accountability.

Democrats' Latest Attack on Trump Will Have You Laughing Your Head Off

Democrats' Latest Attack on Trump Will Have You Laughing Your Head Off

On the miles-long list of everything Democrats lack, self-awareness must rank in the top five. This is especially true of leftists who are throwing around wild allegations that the White House is trying to cover up President Donald Trump’s health issues.

Meghan Hays, a former special assistant to former President Joe Biden, discussed supposed concerns over Trump’s health that arose because he did not make public appearances for a few days. His absence from the camera spawned online rumors that he was in poor health or even dead. Indeed, the hashtag “#TrumpIsDead” has been trending on X and other social media platforms.

When asked about Trump’s supposed issues, Hays pointed out that last month, the president “spent 26 days doing public events or talking to the press.”

“To go down for six days and just have a slew of true social posts that are very chaotic and people can't follow all of them is very concerning,” Hays continued. “...The President could just be taking a few days down in August, which is normal for presidents to do, or there could be actually something wrong. The problem is, we don't know and they're not being transparent about.”

The hypocrisy in Hays’ remarks is so thick you would need an industrial-grade chainsaw to slice through it. When Biden was allegedly the president, his team and comrades on the left worked feverishly to make sure the public did not know the extent of his apparent cognitive decline.

From the start, White House aides used various strategies to manage public perceptions of his age-related problems. This was because the public could see there was something off about the former president when he addressed reporters, gave speeches, and tried to walk on stairs.

His aides routinely limited his public appearances and even rescheduled meetings to make sure he was only in public on his “good days.” They often ended his interactions with the public by 4 p.m. when he was too tired to continue. A national security official admitted in 2021 that sometimes meetings were postponed because of the former president’s “bad days.”

Biden’s aides tightly scripted Biden’s press conferences, providing him with notecards and instructions in large font. He held fewer press conferences than any modern president because his team sought to keep the public in the dark about his condition.

CNN’s Jake Tapper wrote a book detailing how several aides formed a protective “cocoon” around Biden, even limiting his interactions with cabinet members so they would not notice that the former president was struggling.

The House Oversight Committee has sought testimony from these aides. However, some have invoked the Fifth Amendment, which means they are still covering for Biden even though he is no longer in office.

Trump’s absence is nowhere near as glaring as the wholesale propaganda effort to con the public into believing Biden was full of energy and vitality despite his advanced age. Unfortunately for Democrats, the public knows that the former president was not fit to serve in the Oval Office. Even left-wing media has admitted as much, which makes this line of attack against Trump even more curious. After all, why would anyone take them seriously when they were guilty of far worse than Trump taking a few days off?

They've Lost Their Minds

AP Photo/Tim Ireland

Some of the most basic assumptions about life can no longer be taken for granted.

The Three Stooges were one of the few groups that actively criticized the Nazis during their twelve-year rule. Their blatantly anti-Hitler short movies caused headaches for Columbia Pictures as Josef Goebbels threatened not to distribute their movies in the Third Reich. The Three Stooges were unsparing in their ridicule of the Nazis and Japanese, which worked perfectly with Moe having a resemblance to the Führer himself and Curly making a natural fat Field Marshal Goering. In one short, Moe orders a Nazi ship crew to shoot themselves in the head. The captain replies, “We are Germans. We have no brains.”

Apparently, the spirit of the Three Stooges lives on. I was scanning The Telegraph and much to my shock, I saw a headline that read, “Rights of asylum seekers trump the people of Epping, Home Office argues.” The article goes into the plight of Epping, where illegal aliens have been put up in hotels against the will of the locals, who have vociferously expressed their disapproval. The Home Office is trying to pull a “we know better” fast one by claiming that the local Epping council is made up of town folk rubes. In contrast, the Home Office in Whitehall, London, really knows what’s best for the country as a whole: “The [Home Secretary] is taken for these purposes as representing the public interest of the entirety of the United Kingdom and discharging obligations conferred on her alone by Parliament.” You knuckleheads may know what’s best for you, but we here 24 miles away in the rarified air of the capital know what’s really best for you and the rest of the UK. Americans often do not know how incredible—if quite imperfect—the US is. But here is Exhibit A: you want to be free of illegal immigrants who have, at times, been involved in crimes against the locals. We want these people in our country, and you’re just going to shut up and live with it. That is the answer of the present Labour government. The previous Tory governments would have most likely made the same argument. They don’t care about the rights of the citizens of Epping or anywhere else. Their orders come from the WEF, not UK voters.

What’s happening in Epping is true throughout the Western world. We all saw the tractor and “yellow vest” protests: European countries are enacting programs to significantly reduce farmland and farming practices. They would love to get rid of nitrogen-based fertilizers, as it is claimed that their byproducts are a threat to mankind. Sri Lanka did this, had a serious famine, and a coup that changed the government. Across the street from us is a low-slung building that for most of its 80 years served as a kindergarten. The city now wants to make it into a ten-story building. The only reason why the project is not moving forward is that different factions in city hall want their constituents to be the beneficiaries of the new apartments. When there was a hearing at the local zoning board, I could see that they were hellbent on building this ugly monstrosity. I only requested more parking to alleviate the current pressure and accommodate new residents. I was refused. “The building is meant for students and they don’t have cars” was the Epping-level lie given back to me (of course, they have cars). That we sometimes, at 11 pm, drive in circles trying in vain to find parking means nothing to these people. Not only did they refuse to add parking, but they also said that they would remove existing parking to make the building larger.

Why are our politicians so disconnected from the populace? For them, the voters are a once in a very few years nuisance. Handshakes, smiles, promises, and then victory. And then the voters are conveniently forgotten. Larger forces like Soros dictating to his platoon of DAs in American cities replace the We the People background chorus. The voters are a mere afterthought after the votes have been counted. How many times have you seen your representatives in Congress vote or act in a manner that is opposite to both their expressed program and the will of the majority of the party that put them into office? Why isn’t the “Republican Senate” getting Donald Trump’s confirmations taken care of? Because many of the 53 Republicans in the upper house don’t like the president and certainly don’t care about you, me, or tens of millions of other Trump voters. “We’re in! Who are you?”

Just as politicians so easily disavow the express will of the people who gave them power, our societies have lost connection to what was an accepted reality not long ago. When I was growing up, a boy competing against the girls would have been considered the biggest loser at school. While there have always been more effeminate boys and tomboy girls, no governmental body would have accepted or encouraged harming them physically to pretend to change their gender. As we saw from the recent shooting, “trans” is a form of mental illness. When most people believed in God or accepted basic religious premises, a person would not conclude that he was in the “wrong body”. God made me this way, and it’s my job to make the most of who I am and what I can do. But like the folks in the Home Office in England, our job is not to do the right thing but rather to cater to the demented spirit of the time. Guys can walk off with women’s hardware and be celebrated. School officials and doctors can begin irreversible processes to sterilize and physically damage children because of nonsensical concepts of “gender”. Religious concepts are used to set the outer limits of societies, even democracies. It was obvious that your citizens come first. It was a no-brainer that there were boys and girls, period. When the foundations of society are removed, how long can the undulating structure stand before it collapses on itself?

The actions of the Home Office reflect a strong European view that individual states need to be subsumed into much larger international bodies. Brexit mostly fizzled out as politicians of all stripes in England simply feel more comfortable having the EU tell them what to do than doing what is best for their fellow citizens. We live in a strange age. In the past, countries looked out for their interests. When those interests butted heads, the issues were resolved either through treaty or war. China, Russia, and India still act in this manner: they invest in energy infrastructure to improve their citizens’ lives. In Europe and the US, under Biden, efforts were made to reduce energy reliability and availability. The drive for “net zero” and decarbonization is leading to poverty, higher energy costs, and less reliable electricity. And whatever carbon dioxide is not produced will be more than offset by additional Chinese and Indian power plants. It is an exercise in preening, not in taking care of one’s citizens.

The US under Biden obviously behaved like the UK. Veterans could sleep on the street while illegal aliens were put up in hotel rooms and given monthly stipends. You could be denied a flight because your COVID test was 25 hours old, while thousands crossed the southern US border without any known COVID status at the same time. The US favored the foreigners but never disclosed this to the court.

In light of the above, it is no surprise that the British Home Office is more worried about fake asylum seekers than its own citizens. Their thoughts are with the internationalists and not with those whom they swore to represent.
