The Insidiousness of 'Equity Versus Equality'

The Insidiousness of 'Equity Versus Equality'

Once upon a time, the buzz word from the left was “equality.” They wanted everyone to be equal to one another, which isn’t such a bad thing. Everyone should be equal before the eyes of the law.

However, equality has fallen by the wayside. Why?

Because “equality” left too much wiggle room. Most of us believe in “equality of opportunity.” We don’t like the deck being stacked against anyone. The idea that if the playing field is level, then the best rise to the top isn’t really controversial in most circles. We don’t mind getting beaten by someone who is better than us.

What some wanted, though, was equality of outcome. They want everyone to end up around about the same point. If everyone is at the same level, then no one is better or wealthier.

See, “equality” has traded places with “equity.”

In other words, the idea is that rather than providing a level playing field for everyone, then people should be given a boost up. It’s about “equality of outcome” in a package that makes it impossible for anyone to misunderstand.

And on the surface, it sounds good if you don’t know any better. After all, a nation full of rich people sounds great. The idea of even the poorest Americans living in mansions is a wonderful dream.

It’ll never happen, though.

See, some people are poor because, well, they make bad choices. Trust me, I’d be a lot better off financially if I’d made better decisions through the years. I might have staved off some of the worst times in my life if I had.

So understand, I’m not judging people harshly when I say this. I’m right there with them.

On the flip side, some people seemingly have a sixth sense about financial matters. They know how to balance the risks of investments in such a way that they make wise, advantageous decisions.

The poor ye shall have with ye always.

The rich ye shall have with you always too.

Share

Yet for those pushing equity, they don’t understand that. They don’t get that the reason you have winners and losers isn’t because the deck is stacked, but because human nature means some people are going to be better at some things than others would be.

Instead of understanding human nature, they want to work against it. They want to push a pie-in-the-sky idea that somehow, we can all be at the same level.

Even if we can, though, the evidence is clear that such a level isn’t good for everyone.

From Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union to Cuba and Venezuela, time and time again, programs meant to create equity ends up bringing everyone down to poverty levels.

Actually, it’s worse than poverty levels as we know them in the United States.

Equity, as the term is used by the social justice jihadists that plague our great nation, is nothing more than a bid to enact communism.

Oh, they might claim otherwise, but communism is predicated on the same class-warfare rhetoric and seeks the exact same goals. It seeks to punish the wealthy for the benefit of people who have done nothing to deserve that money.

It’s why mentions of “equity” should cause all of us to get uneasy.

When we hear it, it’s important to call it out, to call it precisely what it is, a bid for “equality of outcome.” It seems to cut some off at the knees just because others aren’t quite as tall.

They’re the people who read Harrison Bergeron and thought it sounded like a swell idea.

Never let them gain hold because if they do, we’ve already seen where it leads.

DEMOCRATS PLAY THE RACE CARD ON BEHALF OF TANDEN AND BECERRA, PART TWO

DEMOCRATS PLAY THE RACE CARD ON BEHALF OF TANDEN AND BECERRA, PART TWO

BY PAUL MIRENGOFF IN JOE BIDEN'S NOMINEESMEDIA BIASRACE

The mainstream media continues to peddle the obvious falsehood that certain of President Biden’s nominees are being opposed and stalled in the Senate because they are “of color.” I discussed Politico’s lame effort in this regard on the Democrats’ behalf last night. Not to be outdone, the Washington Post weighs in with this piece by Annie Linskey here.

If you read far enough into Linskey’s report, you will learn that four years ago, 41 Democrats voted against confirming Ben Carson, who is Black, and six Democrats voted against Elaine Chao, who is Asian American. So far, no Biden nominee “of color” has been voted down and only Neera Tanden and maybe Xavier Becerra seem to be in trouble.

The objection to Tanden is that she repeatedly attacked Republican Senators, as well as Bernie Sanders, with nasty tweets. As I said last night, whatever one’s race, ethnicity, or gender, it’s bad practice to call Senators names if you hope to be confirmed for any position by the Senate.

The problems with Becerra are that (1) he lacks the relevant background to run the Department of Health and Human Services and (2) he’s a radical — so much as that he can’t even get along with the Little Sisters of the Poor. Becerra could be a WASP named Beck. His treatment by the Senate would be no different. I’ve seen no credible argument to the contrary.

Indeed, two Black Biden nominees, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and U.N. Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield, were confirmed promptly with support from both sides of aisle. And Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, who is Latino, has also been confirmed.

The Democrats know that Tanden and Becerra aren’t in trouble because of their skin color. So does Annie Linskey. They understand that this is a non-story, and are simply playing the race card in the hope of intimidating Joe Manchin and scoring points against Republican Senators.

They also sense that two radical DOJ nominees, Vanita Gupta and Kristen Clarke, may be in trouble — especially Clarke given her racist statements and promotion of anti-Semitism as a student. Both happen to be “of color” and it’s no accident that they feature in Linskey’s story, even though Joe Manchin has said nothing about them, as far as I know.

The Dems are preparing the battlefield. Politico and the Washington Post are helping them do it.

If they are really worried about the treatment of Asian-Americans, they should turn their attention to the colleges and universities that are discriminating against this group on the basis of race. Isn’t it interesting how Asians become victims — “people of color” — when it suits Democratic polemical purposes, but are treated as an uber-privileged group lacking in desirable personal traits when the left needs them to take a back seat?

Trump Is Back in the ‘Political Arena,’ Says Sebastian Gorka

Trump Is Back in the ‘Political Arena,’ Says Sebastian Gorka

February 24, 2021 Updated: February 24, 2021

Former President Donald Trump is “back in the political arena” after going silent following Jan. 20, said his former political adviser, Sebastian Gorka.

In an interview with Sky News, Gorka remarked that following the Jan. 6 Capitol riots, he believed Trump would disappear for months.

“This man has to disappear for a while … before he can get back in politics,” Gorka said. “But that all changed” when he was impeached in the House for allegedly inciting violence on Jan. 6, he added.

The impeachment, Gorka asserted, allowed Trump to move “back into the political arena” sooner.

He cited the establishment of Trump’s “Office of the 45th President,” his first political endorsement of Sarah Sanders for Arkansas governor, held interviews with media outlets about the passing of radio host Rush Limbaugh last week, and the move to speak at Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) over the weekend. Trump is slated to deliver a speech on Sunday, Feb. 28.

“Donald Trump is back and is the de facto conservative kingmaker,” he proclaimed, without elaborating on the former president’s next moves or whether he will run for office in 2024.

“None of the rising stars in the conservative movement” can generate the same interest as Trump, he argued.

According to a slew of recent polls, Republican voters view Trump quite favorably. Some polls have found that a significant number of GOP voters would be willing to join a Trump-backed political party if he breaks off from the Republican establishment.

Meanwhile, Republican members of Congress who voted to impeach, convict, or took other actions against Trump in recent weeks have been censured or condemned by local Republican Party groups.

About a week ago, the former president issued a statement that strongly criticized Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), calling on him to rescind his leadership position while saying that Republicans won’t take majorities in the Senate under his leadership. It came after McConnell suggested in an opinion piece for the Wall Street Journal that Trump could face criminal prosecution for his Jan. 6 speech.

Trump also issued a lengthy statement via email criticizing the Supreme Court’s Monday decision not to block his taxes from being released to a grand jury convened by Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance.

“The new phenomenon of ‘headhunting’ prosecutors and AGs—who try to take down their political opponents using the law as a weapon—is a threat to the very foundation of our liberty,” he said. “That’s what is done in third world countries. Even worse are those who run for prosecutorial or attorney general offices in far-left states and jurisdictions pledging to take out a political opponent. That’s fascism, not justice—and that is exactly what they are trying to do with respect to me, except that the people of our Country won’t stand for it.”

New Poll Shows Trump's Populism Is Reshaping the Electorate

New Poll Shows Trump's Populism Is Reshaping the Electorate

President Donald Trump narrowly lost reelection last year — and questions about abuses of the process remain — but he did gain historic support from minorities, particularly black and Hispanic voters. A new NBC News poll suggests that the American electorate is shifting in ways that bode well for the Republican Party.

In the last decade, the percentage of blue-collar voters who call themselves Republicans has increased by 12 points, while the percent of blue-collar voters who call themselves Democrats dropped by 8 points. Meanwhile, Republicans lost 1 percent of white-collar workers while Democrats gained 1 percent of those voters.

In the past decade, white blue-collar workers have shifted heavily toward the GOP. In 2010, only 45 percent of blue-collar workers who identified themselves as white called themselves Republicans. In 2016, that number ticked up to 47 percent. Last year, 57 percent of white blue-collar workers called themselves Republicans.

Yet blue-collar workers among racial minorities are also flocking to the GOP. In 2010, only 23 percent of Hispanic blue-collar workers identified as Republican, but by 2020, that number had grown to 36 percent, a 13-point swing.

Republicans have also picked up black blue-collar workers. In 2010, only 5 percent of black blue-collar workers identified as Republican, but in 2020, 12 percent of them did so.

Even though Trump lost reelection, it would be a mistake for the GOP to reject his populist direction. The Trump presidency reshaped the electorate, as the president combatted the smug woke institutions that reject the common sense of hard-working Americans. Down-to-earth blue-collar workers know there’s something off about transgenderism, Marxist critical race theory, climate alarmism, illegal immigration, and more of the Left’s sacred-cow issues. Trump proved himself willing to combat the woke ideologies that harm working-class Americans of all races, and the GOP should build on his legacy on this.

I&I Editorial

Congressional Democrats are demanding to know what communications giants such as Comcast and AT&T are going to do about “the spread of dangerous misinformation.” How quickly this country is descending into an authoritarian regime where the government controls speech and the flow of information.

Ahead of a House Energy and Commerce Committee hearing Wednesday, California Democratic Reps. Anna G. Eshoo and Jerry McNerney wrote a letter to Comcast, AT&T, Spectrum, Dish, Verizon, Cox, Altice, Roku, Amazon, Apple, Google, and Hulu. According to the New York Times, which says it has reviewed the correspondence, the pair is not pleased that “the cable, satellite and over-the-top companies that disseminate these media outlets” – likely referring to Fox News, One America News Network, and Newsmax – “have done nothing in response to the misinformation aired by these outlets.”

The hearing was called to focus on “disinformation and extremism in the media.” In practice it’s a stage for peacock strutting, spin, and projection (a diversionary tactic Democrats are well-practiced in) with the ultimate goal of gaining full control of the flow of information.

The Democrats telegraphed their intentions when Eshoo and McNerney assumed the role of prosecutors to ask the companies what steps they took “prior to, on and following the Nov. 3, 2020, elections and the Jan. 6, 2021, attacks to monitor, respond to and reduce the spread of disinformation, including encouragement or incitement of violence by channels your company disseminates to millions of Americans?”

Eshoo and McNerney further exposed their repressive intentions when they asked the companies if they are “planning to continue carrying Fox News, OANN and Newsmax” on their platforms “both now and beyond the renewal date?” and “if so, why?”

Is this not chilling? The Democrats care nothing about misinformation and disinformation, nor freedom of speech. Their objective is to use the Jan. 6 Capitol trespass-and-vandalize ruckus, as well as legitimate questions about the 2020 election, to shut down the speech of their political opponents. They lust for raw political and social power, to rule, not govern under constitutional limits, forever. It is that simple.

Before it’s incinerated by the furnaces of the Orwellian memory hole operated by the legacy media, we remind readers here that the press has been involved in its own disinformation campaign regarding the Capitol incident. It has repeatedly lied about the events of that day in an effort to portray Trump supporters, Republicans, conservatives, and small-government advocates as domestic terrorists.

Government censorship must be abhorred in a free society, and the fact we’re watching a political party in power attempt to suppress speech is clear evidence we’ve entered an era in which freedom is only for the card-carrying members of the ruling class. A federal judge shouldn’t have to say, as one did a few years back, that “we do not want the government … deciding what is political truth – for fear that the government might persecute those who criticize it. Instead, in a democracy, the voters should decide.”

But this is where we are in an America no previous generation would recognize. And the downward spiral is accelerating. Unless our decline is turned around hard and soon, it won’t be long before we’re burning books, because we’re already symbolically burning anyone who dares express a view that dissents from the Democrat-media narrative.

Teacher's Unions Admit Keeping Schools Closed All About Politics

Teacher's Unions Admit Keeping Schools Closed All About Politics

It’s been almost a year since children were sent home from school as part of the whole “15 days to flatten the curve.” Almost a year since children were cut off from their friends and teachers.

Now, I get the concerns in the early days. We didn’t know how bad the virus would be, so we wanted to protect our kids. I didn’t blink when they told me that my daughter wouldn’t be going back to school for a little while.

So, we got ready for at-home schooling and saw what a trainwreck my local school system made of that.

Regardless, while I opted to begin homeschooling my daughter, others trusted public schools would reopen when it was safe enough.

The thing is, it’s now safe enough and nothing’s happening. Why? The teacher’s unions.

In a tweet on Saturday, the American Federation of Teachers tweeted this:

In other words, this is about politics, not safety.

How can I say that? Because, whether they realize it or not, they admitted as much.

See, these “Republican talking points” mentioned? They’re called “scientific studies,” but don’t take my word for it. This comes from that uber right-wing website The New York Times:

On Tuesday, federal health officials weighed in with a call for returning children to the nation’s classrooms as soon as possible, saying the “preponderance of available evidence” indicates that in-person instruction can be carried out safely as long as mask-wearing and social distancing are maintained.

Federal officials cited the many benefits of in-person schooling for children, and argued for prioritizing their educational, developmental and emotional and mental health needs. “Schools are an important source not just of education, but health and social services for children,” Dr. Honein said.

The call by Dr. Honein and other officials reflects a consensus among some leading educators and public health experts that schools should be the last to close and the first to open when shutdowns are necessary.

Yet AFT wants to call these “Republican talking points” simply because then they can dismiss them.

The kicker?

It seems there are a number of teachers who want to get back into the classroom. There are tons of students who want back in the classrooms. There are tons of parents who want them all to be back in the classrooms.

So who really doesn’t want to be in the classrooms? The American Federation of Teachers.

See, as it stands right now, Democrats don’t want to reopen anything if they can help it. For them, the economy going deeper and deeper into the toilet is a good thing. I don’t know for a fact they’re happy with that, but they have a lot to gain if the economy slumps another quarter or two.

At that point, they can pass a pile of legislation such as an increase in the minimum wage, then reopen the country. While the recovery wouldn’t be as grand as it could have been, there would still be something that looks like a recovery, and Democrats will pat themselves on the back.

But for that to work, everyone on the left has to be on the same page. That includes the unions. For AFT, that means fighting to keep out of the classrooms until the timing is right.

Then, we’ll see Democrat incumbents going on about how they reopened the economy, got our kids back in school, and have us on the road to recovery, all while pretending that they weren’t the ones screaming for everything to be locked down in the first place.

Who cares about studies that make it clear that we can safely reopen schools now? Who cares if those same studies show that teachers aren’t getting infected as long as a few sensible precautions are taken? Doesn’t matter because they’ll still demand the vaccine, knowing damn good and well that will further delay reopening schools, despite there being no real risk.

AFT doesn’t care about students. They never have. Their every move has been about increasing their own power.

By claiming that the move to get teachers back in the classroom is a Republican ploy, they can justify their stall as long as they want. They can side with their Democratic allies and hold off on doing what’s right for our children.

They don’t think they admitted to playing politics, but by calling the science a “Republican talking point,” they really did.

Opinion: Lies the Supreme Court Told Me

Opinion: Lies the Supreme Court Told Me

February 22, 2021 Updated: February 22, 2021

Commentary

In a fashion we must now regard as entirely predictable the Supreme Court of the United States has dismissed (i.e., thrown out) the various state challenges to the 2020 presidential election.

Any decisions on these challenges were determined by the majority to be “moot” because the election had already been decided, and Donald Trump has conceded to Joe Biden. (Associate Justices Thomas, Alito and Gorsuch objected in varying degrees.)

In other words, a stolen presidential election—if it happens, we don’t really know in this case—has an almost immediate statute of limitations, although the results of that election can affect hundreds of millions, if not, as in the case of the United States, nearly the entirety of humanity.

This is true, apparently for a majority of the Supremes, although all sorts of crimes, some not particularly onerous, have statutes of limitations that can go on for years.

Go figure.

The Supremes also cited the issue of “standing,” a term of legal “art” that has always struck me, despite all the precedents on which it is supposedly based, as wide open for biased interpretation of the most self-serving sort. One person’s “standing” can be another’s closed door, almost at will and certainly by vote of a “majority.”

If I sound cynical about the Supreme Court, I have to admit I am. It’s even true of the law in general, which I want to believe in and admire, but increasingly no longer do.

In the real world, legal results tend to mirror A.J. Liebling’s 1960 comment in The New Yorker about the press: “Freedom of the press is guaranteed only to those who own one.”

The law belongs to those who have the deepest control of a society at the time.

We want lady justice to be blind but in actuality she’s a cyborg with all-seeing, rotating night vision similar to the kind you might find on many urban street corners today from Beijing to Chicago, using the latest algorithms to isolate presumed enemies of the state.

And, yes, I am no lawyer. I haven’t taken even one course in the law and spent my time in college and graduate school studying now questionable white men like John Milton.

But over my decades as a Hollywood screenwriter and then founder and CEO of PJMedia I employed many lawyers—some very good and some not so much—and came to understand the limitations on what they did.

Contracts, it turned out, weren’t worth much more than the paper they were written on unless both parties wanted to honor them. Enforcing infringements, unless they were hugely egregious, was rarely worth the expense and effort.

Lawsuits—win or lose— tend to take over your life in highly deleterious ways. Few want to get involved.

The Supreme Court is the apotheosis of this system—an organization that puts its finger in the air to see which way the wind is blowing (assuming that’s even necessary) and then writes its opinions based on pre-conceived notions designed to offend the lowest number.

Sadly, it is the last place to look for justice in a Presidential election—or anything, really, that tilts against that prevailing wind.

They wouldn’t even, as Clarence Thomas requested, explore the blatantly unconstitutional malfeasances in various states where unelected officials clearly and unlawfully superseded the legislatures in changing election law by fiat, something we would think would only happen in totalitarian countries.

But it happened here, my friends, several times. We could cite the Supreme Court for dereliction of duty … or we could look elsewhere for justice.
