New Deep State? Here's the Latest Undemocratic Activity Embraced by Congressional Staffers

These kids need to be smacked with a frying pan. Not that I’m approaching AARP age, but in my day, when you were an intern or entry-level employee, the task was simple: do your job and keep your mouth shut. The latter applies double for interns—you’re meant to be seen, not heard. On the Hill, we’ve seen scores of Biden staffers revolt against their bosses in the aftermath of the Israeli invasion of Gaza. Bloomberg wrote about a new trend: unelected staffers pushing back against their bosses, also known as elected lawmakers (via Bloomberg Government):

Congressional staff … are increasingly challenging their own bosses in a bid to shift the balance of power on Capitol Hill, representing a sea change in the relationship between lawmakers and the legions of workers who ensure the House and Senate function.

A combination of factors, ranging from the Jan. 6 attacks to generational divides, are propelling unprecedented levels of organizing and activism among staff and leading to questions about the limits of those activities and convincing some to give up their jobs.

“They’re asserting themselves more,” said Bradford Fitch, president and CEO of the Congressional Management Foundation.

[…]

Advocacy spread even to the official business of Congress and the Supreme Court, especially through the work of nonpartisan staff associations.

Hispanic staffers want Congress to provide a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants who came to the country as children so they can work on the Hill.

LGBTQ+ staffers have called out House lawmakers for denigrating the transgender community, applauded passage of legislation codifying federal protections for same-sex marriages (Public Law 117-228), and rebutted a Supreme Court case carving out religious exemptions for contractors to those weddings.

Staff associations representing staffers of color opposed legislation eliminating the House’s diversity and inclusion office, and one representing Korean-Americans on the Hill applauded introduction of a non-binding measure condemning discrimination against Asian-Americans during the pandemic (H. Res. 153).

[…]

Lawmakers’ staff have always challenged their bosses’ positions, albeit behind closed door or by leaking to the press.

[…]

Michael Thorning, director of structural democracy at the Bipartisan Policy Center, said staffers’ authorship of letters, even anonymously, could be “potentially really harmful to the institution” if it reveals internal operations or deliberations. He said training for staffers and members alike could help offices navigate these new dynamics.

“You have to, I think, either be willing to accept your boss’s decisions or be willing to find somewhere else to work,” Thorning said.

No one elected these little brats. You’re meant to answer calls and emails, pass along messages, and do whatever rudimentary work entails concerning elected representatives' daily activities. For senior staff, whatever the boss wants is the goal. Sure, you’ve earned the privilege of chiming in on specific aspects of strategy in achieving that aim, but that doesn’t entail leaking sensitive details to the press or committing sabotage. If you feel that strongly, you need to find another job.

The actions of the deep state from supposed apolitical actors in the bureaucracy and intelligence community have leeched into the worst individuals in recent college graduates in the Capitol Building who will execute kamikaze runs to try and steer their bosses and themselves on remaining on what they view as the right side of history. It's this addiction to being on the correct side of that arc that's led to truly anti-democratic antics from the Left.

You weren't elected, kids. And to the folks at the DOJ, FBI, CIA, and elsewhere in DC who have done similar things because they disagreed with Trump, the same principle applies to you, too.

New Republic: MAGA Is Tanking Border Deal In Anticipation of 'Full-Blown Ethonationalist Savagery'

New Republic: MAGA Is Tanking Border Deal In Anticipation of 'Full-Blown Ethonationalist Savagery'

Twitter

We thought Greg Sargent used to write a column for the Washington Post, but now he's writing for The New Republic, and he's got a hot take on why the GOP — sorry, Donald Trump and MAGA — are tanking the border deal that would allow 5,000 illegal immigrants into the country every day, or $1.8 million a year. Even though Trump is a private citizen, he's apparently been putting pressure on the Republicans to sink that Senate border compromise. It's such bad legislation that President Joe Biden says he'd sign it.

Sargent has a piece in The New Republic explaining why MAGA opposes this deal — Trump and MAGA want to keep the border crisis in the news this year because it's bad for Biden. It doesn't end there, though; Trump would use his second term to implement "full-blown ethnonationalist savagery."

"GOP Senator Reveals the Sick Truth About the Trump-MAGA Border Scam":

To see how, ask yourself this: Why would Trump and MAGA oppose granting the president, possibly including Trump himself, all these new resources and authorities?

True, the bill wouldn’t give them everything they want. It wouldn’t gut Biden’s parole programs. But those have little to do with border security in any case: They concern migrants who apply for entry to the United States from abroad, reducing their need to show up at the border (Republicans oppose this because it lets migrants into the country efficiently). The bill wouldn’t eliminate the release of migrants, but that would require enormous spending on detention that Congress will never pass anyway.

I think it’s no accident that Trump and MAGA are trying to sink this deal even as Trump and Miller are loudly advertising plans for an extraordinarily cruel and draconian second-term crackdown. This includes the mass removals of millions of undocumented immigrants settled here, commencing on Day One; and dramatically scaled-up “camps” to detain enormous numbers of asylum-seekers, who would be subject to appalling new limits that would go further than the GOP bill does. Trump is openly flaunting this agenda’s white nationalist aspirations.

We're right back to those cages Trump built to house brown children. Oh, wait, the Obama administration built those cages.

Of course, it all comes down to white nationalism.

It's a garbage bill that rolls out the red carpet for 5,000 illegals a day, every day, forever. But it is "ethnonationalist savagery" to want America to be made up of American citizens.

U.S. OUT OF U.N.

U.S. OUT OF U.N.

BY JOHN HINDERAKER IN UNITED NATIONS

Those who pay attention have known for years that UNRWA–the United Nations’ Relief and Works Agency–is nothing but an arm of Hamas. UNRWA has, in large part, run the schools where Gazan children are taught to hate Jews. UNRWA, like the Palestinian “stringers” used by the major wire services, has long run interference for Hamas and other terrorists. See current “Picks” by Brendan O’Neill and the Times of Israel for a great deal more.

Recently, it has come out that a number of UNRWA employees actually participated in Gaza’s October 7 massacre, helping to kill and kidnap Jews. So the UNRWA story has finally–for the first time, perhaps–reached the legacy media. Reuters is on the case, sort of. As you would expect, Reuters talks in terms of Israeli allegations:

An Israeli intelligence dossier that prompted a cascade of countries to halt funds for a U.N. Palestinian aid agency includes allegations that some staff took part in abductions and killings during the Oct. 7 raid that sparked the Gaza war.

The six-page dossier, seen by Reuters, alleges that some 190 UNRWA employees, including teachers, have doubled as Hamas or Islamic Jihad militants. It has names and pictures for 11 them.

The dossier said one of the 11 is a school counsellor who helped his son abduct a woman during the Hamas infiltration in which Israel says 1,200 people were killed and 253 kidnapped.
***
Another, an UNRWA social worker, is accused of unspecified involvement in the transfer to Gaza of a slain Israeli soldier’s corpse and of coordinating the movements of pick-up trucks used by the raiders and of weapons supplies.

A third Palestinian in the dossier is accused of taking part in a rampage in the Israeli border village Beeri, one-tenth of whose residents were killed. A fourth is accused of participating in an attack on Reim, site both of an army base that was overrun and a rave where more than 360 revellers died.

And so on. The U.N. says it is shocked–shocked!–to learn that some of its employees are Hamas terrorists. But I don’t think it came as much of a surprise to the countries, including the U.S., who have cut off funding to UNRWA:

More than 10 countries, including major donors the United States and Germany, have halted their funding to the agency.

Reuters of course sees this as a problem, but I think it is entirely to the good. It has been decades since any arm of the United Nations has played a positive role in the Middle East. UNRWA has been a vehicle through which the United States, among others, has shamefully supported Gaza’s terrorist infrastructure and its perverted culture of Jew-hatred. If and when the Israelis complete their conquest of Gaza–may it come swiftly–they should bar the U.N. from any ongoing role in that territory.

More broadly, one can’t help asking: what good is the United Nations? Is there any agency of that shambling organization that is actually a positive force in the world?

I don’t know. There might be. But for the most part, the U.N. plays a negative part. Its “peacekeeping” forces seem to function mainly as enablers of rape and sexual abuse. Its General Assembly is an anti-Semitic joke. Its Security Council, the source of real power to the extent the U.N. has any power, is an archaic post-World War II arrangement where any positive action (few of which are ever proposed) can be vetoed by Russia. And more often, it is the U.S. vetoing evil resolutions.

The U.N.’s main focus in recent decades has been the Middle East, where it, as typified by UNRWA, has played a generally negative, pro-terrorist role. In areas that should be of higher priority, like Ukraine and China, what has the U.N. done? Nothing. Has the U.N. even acknowledged the Uighers’ slavery, let alone tried to remediate it? Not that I know of.

Then we have the International Court of Justice, a creature of the United Nations, which just a few days ago helpfully “ordered” Israel not to engage in “genocide” in Gaza. Thanks for that input.

So the question naturally arises: why should the United States have anything to do with the U.N.? I understand why Russia wants the U.N. to exist, and why the 57 Islamic countries that dominate the General Assembly want it to exist, and why evil regimes like Iran’s that gain political cover by being appointed to the U.N’s Human Rights Council want it to exist, and why tiny third-world countries that are hard to find on a map, but get equal votes in the General Assembly, want it to exist. But why should we want the U.N. to exist? Why should we support it?

I don’t think there is a good answer to that question. The U.N. purports to have moral authority superior to ours, but that is a lie. The U.N. has no moral authority at all; certainly less than that of the United States. The U.N. does obvious evil in the world, and I can’t see any substantial good to outweigh that evil. If there are specific agencies of the U.N. that actually do something productive, they could easily be reproduced in a post-U.N. world.

The United Nations was seen, at its birth, as a harbinger of world peace. That vision obviously turned out to be a mirage. The time has come, I think, to pull the plug.

THE FRENCH REVOLUTION

THE FRENCH REVOLUTION

BY JOHN HINDERAKER IN AGRICULTURECLIMATEFRANCELEFTISM

Farmers across much of Europe are protesting against their governments’ anti-agriculture policies. In France, farmers are shutting down access to Paris:

Farmers set up roadblocks on eight motorways around Paris today as they made good their threat to place a stranglehold on the capital.

“The siege of Paris is under way,” said Damien Greffin, vice-chairman of the country’s biggest farming union, the FNSEA. He said the plan was to “encircle” the capital, but not to drive tractors into the centre of the city.
***
Many said they would not move until the government had given in to their demands, which include an increase in the price they are paid for their produce, a decrease in red tape and the scrapping of some environmental rules.

I don’t understand how farm prices are controlled in France, but the article says France has “a law designed to ensure a fair price for French produce.” But the other items–red tape and environmental rules, which I think are the same grievance–are common to European farmers’ movements.

Macron, who is trying to stay away from the front line, is also facing criticism, with commentators urging him to allow French farmers to flout EU laws presented as unfair. French farmers say, for instance, that they are banned from using pesticides permitted in Spain and Italy.

The Left is trying to make our lives worse in many ways, one of which is raising the price of food. This is done by banning chemicals needed to grow crops cheaply (or at all), by banning or limiting animal husbandry, and by imposing environmental regulations that raise the cost of producing food. The French farmers’ most immediate concern may be the prices they are getting from supermarkets, but more broadly all of these farmers’ movements represent the interests of all of us who want to eat. The farmers are just the ones on the firing line.

Sen. Rick Scott Suggests 'Accountability Measure' That Forces @JoeBiden to Secure the Border

Sen. Rick Scott Suggests 'Accountability Measure' That Forces @JoeBiden to Secure the Border

AP Photo/Mariam Zuhaib

"Unless there's some accountability measure that forces @JoeBiden to secure the border, he never will," tweets Sen. Rick Scott (R-Florida).

"Unless there's some accountability measure that forces Biden to secure the border -- tied to Ukraine aid, tied to something else -- unless there's something like that, Biden's not going to comply with the law," Sen. Scott said on 'Fox News Sunday.'

That another act of Congress is apparently needed to secure our nation's border is the first problem. The force of law flowing from the Constitution through relevant immigration laws to secure the border and maintain an orderly immigration process should already be available. The second problem is that Republicans are going to compromise in some sort of border security "deal." Republicans should be arguing for and prepared to accept no less than the whole enchilada when it comes to securing the U.S. southern border. Partial border security, whatever form such would take, is not border security. Whether or not we as a nation are going to allow an open border and an out-of-order immigration process should not be an issue subject to political debate.

The staggering statistics describe a national security disaster and humanitarian emergency that has occurred as a result of open borders policies. The volume of persons being dealt with is in the millions. The range of potential threats posed is from basic criminality to terrorism. Illegal immigration threatens the safety of a nation's citizens, and it disenfranchises those who are immigrating and who have immigrated legally. Immigration laws must be enforced. The immigration system must be allowed to function in an orderly manner. A nation must have borders, and those borders must be secure.

A nation maintaining a secure border and an orderly immigration process for those who would assimilate to its land is more than a hot-button election issue. It is not a patriotic nicety. It is not a problem for only states that are located on borders, nor is it something that affects only conservative Republicans. It is not a buzzword on a list of terms to the left of numbers and percentage symbols. It is not a talking point to be used when politically convenient and popular. It is an absolute necessity for the well-being of a sovereign nation's citizens, and it is one of the very foundations of a free republic.
