Teachers unions--agents of reform: NOT

"Where Are We Investing Our Education Dollars?" [Michael Petrilli]

"The teachers unions are learning that even their friends within the Democratic party won't defend the indefensible, such as protecting bad instructors from losing their jobs. Still, reformers would be unwise to view the unions as down and out. They might be on the defensive when it comes to issues like tenure and merit pay, but they are still leading the charge when it comes to spending taxpayer dollars. Look at the education stimulus, for example, which provides $100 billion for the same old same old and $5 billion for reform. By that count, the unions are still 20 times as powerful as the change agents."
