Naked man shot, killed after assaulting woman on riding mower

I’ve covered thousands of armed citizen stories over the years, and to be honest I’ve forgotten the details of the vast majority of them. There are a few that have stuck with me over the years, however, and I have a feeling that this is going to be one of them.

According to a news release from the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office, the call came in at around 5 p.m. about a person assaulting a woman in the 3700 block of Trophy Place. While they were headed to the scene, deputies were told that the suspect had been shot by the victim’s husband.

When they made it to the home, deputies found a 25-year-old man in the front yard of the home, naked and with gunshot wounds to the chest.

According to authorities, a 66-year old woman was on her riding mower taking care of the front lawn when the 25-year old suspect (who was already naked) threw himself at her and tackled her to the ground. The woman’s 67-year old husband saw what was happening and tried to pull the man off his wife, but he too was attacked.

The husband ran and grabbed a handgun before running back to defend his wife, who was still being assaulted. The woman was taken to a local hospital for her injuries, while the husband suffered only minor injuries in the attack.

We don’t have much information about the suspect other than his name and the fact that he was a local, but one neighbor sounded more surprised about the initial attack than the defensive gun use that followed.

“I wouldn’t want to walk through the woods with clothes on, much less naked. It’s scary, especially with my wife being at home with me not here,” said Ken Burns.

Burns has lived in the neighborhood on Trophy Place with his wife for about five years. He says it’s normally quiet and they feel safe.

… “We’re all packing — even her — so if somebody comes in the house, we have ways to protect ourselves,” said Burns.

Apparently Burns’ house isn’t the only one protected by armed citizens, which is a very good thing.
So far police haven’t said if they know of any reason behind Tyler McElhenny’s assault on the woman or why he was naked at the time of his attack, and given the fact that he’s not around to respond to any questions, we might not ever learn the answers. What we do know, however, is that both the victim and her husband were unable to stop that attack with their bare hands, and if that’s all they had to depend upon who knows how much worse this incident could have been.
Thankfully we (and they) live in a nation that respects the right to keep and bear arms in self-defense, and the couple had the foresight to exercise that right. Most likely this 67-year old man has never before had reason or cause to use a firearm to defend himself or his wife, and I wish that both he and his bride had been able to live out their days without ever being placed in that situation, but I’m at least glad that when that terrible circumstance arose he was ready and able to save the life of the woman he loves.
